TotalEnergies has announced the startup of production from the Lapa South-West project, located in the Santos Basin, approximately 300 kilometers offshore Brazilian coasts. The French group, which holds 48% of the project as operator, connected three wells to the existing floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit of the Lapa field. This startup is part of TotalEnergies' growth strategy in the Brazilian offshore oil sector.
25,000 Additional Barrels Per Day for Lapa Field
According to TotalEnergies, the Lapa South-West project will increase Lapa field production by 25,000 barrels per day. The company notes that this new phase leverages available capacity in existing facilities, enabling low-cost, low-emission production. Nicolas Terraz, executive vice president Exploration-Production at TotalEnergies, describes this startup as an "important milestone" for the group in Brazil.
TotalEnergies indicates that this project contributes to its goal of 3% annual production growth through 2030. The Lapa South-West startup follows Mero-4 which started up in May 2025. The next anticipated Brazilian production startups are Atapu-2 and Sépia-2, expected in 2029 according to the company.
Expanding Brazilian Portfolio
TotalEnergies has been present in Brazil for nearly fifty years and employs nearly 4,000 employees in exploration-production, gas, power and lubricants sectors. The group's exploration-production portfolio in the country comprises nine licenses, four of which are operated by TotalEnergies. In 2025, the company's average production in Brazil reached 184,500 barrels of oil equivalent per day, according to its data.
TotalEnergies is also developing a renewables presence in Brazil. In October 2022, the group concluded a partnership with Casa dos Ventos, Brazilian renewable sector operator, to jointly develop a 12 gigawatts (GW) renewables portfolio. The company, which employs over 100,000 employees across approximately 120 countries, thus confirms its dual hydrocarbons and renewables orientation in the country.
