Alternergy Holdings Corporation has started operating the Dupinga run-of-river hydropower plant, with a capacity of five megawatts (MW), in Nueva Ecija province, Philippines. The facility supplies electricity to the franchise area of the Nueva Ecija II Electric Cooperative Inc. (NEECO II), Area 2, as embedded generation. The cooperative provides power distribution across a service zone covering part of this agricultural province in northern Luzon island.

Annual output of 23,000 MWh over a 25-year period

According to a company press release, the plant is expected to supply energy to about 158,000 residents, generating 23,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually over a 25-year period. The project is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by 16,500 metric tonnes, according to figures provided by Alternergy. Beneficiary cooperative NEECO II thus integrates a new local generation source into its supply mix.

Small-scale hydro and rural electricity access

Run-of-river technology harnesses the natural flow of a waterway without requiring a significant artificial reservoir, limiting the land footprint compared to conventional dams. This embedded generation model allows output to be injected directly into a local cooperative's network, bypassing the national transmission grid. Alternergy Holdings Corporation is developing a portfolio of renewable energy projects in the Philippines, a growing market for clean power capacity in Southeast Asia.
