Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s clean energy subsidiary, and RWE, the German energy company, have secured contracts for difference (CfD) for the Dogger Bank South (DBS) offshore wind farms. These agreements cover two projects of 1.5 GW each, DBS East and DBS West, representing a total capacity of 3 GW. The strike price is set at $111/MWh (£91.20/MWh), according to data released by both companies.
An Investment Exceeding $13 Billion
Total investment for these two wind farms would reach $13.4 billion (£11 billion), according to the partners. Commissioning of DBS West is anticipated for 2031, with DBS East following in 2032. The projects rank among the largest offshore wind developments currently underway in the United Kingdom.
Both companies indicate that these installations would contribute to British energy security and support regional supply chains. CfDs constitute the UK government’s primary mechanism for deploying low-carbon electricity at scale. These contracts provide long-term price visibility to developers.
Masdar’s UK Portfolio
Masdar strengthens its presence in the British offshore wind sector through this award. The Emirati company holds stakes in the London Array wind farm (630 MW) and the Dudgeon wind farm (402 MW). It co-invested €5.2 billion with Iberdrola in the East Anglia THREE project with a capacity of 1.4 GW.
RWE operates ten offshore wind farms in the United Kingdom out of a total of 19 worldwide. The German energy company’s installed capacity in the UK reaches nearly 4 GW, including 1.9 GW net share. The company installed the first British offshore turbines at Blyth in 2000 and commissioned the first commercial wind farm, North Hoyle, in 2004.
Projects Under Construction on Dogger Bank
RWE is currently building the 1.4 GW Sofia project off the coast of Northern England, also located on Dogger Bank. The awards were confirmed by the Low Carbon Contracts Company following bids in the Offshore Wind (Pot 3) category. The concentration of wind projects on Dogger Bank, a shallow area in the North Sea, makes it one of the UK’s main offshore production hubs.
